International Conference Highlights
For the occasion of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, from January 2021 to June 2021, CECOLAB (Portuguese COLAB for the CIRCULAR ECONOMY) was invited by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, of the Government of Portugal, to organize an International Conference within the context of Circular Economy. The Conference will be held on the 20th and 21st of April 2021, in a mixed format: face-to-face, at Oliveira do Hospital, centre region of Portugal and in a Webinar format.
The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union will be an important milestone for the strengthening of Europe's resilience and its citizens' confidence in the European social model. Ultimately, this will be achieved by promoting an EU based on the shared values of solidarity, convergence and cohesion, capable of taking a coordinated action in order to recover from the crisis.
Meeting the three major priorities and the five action lines of the Portuguese Presidency this International Conference “Europe: a Knowledge and Science Bridge Towards a Global Circular Economy features the following Focus Areas and Milestones:

Milestones
- Circular Economy International Cooperation Agenda leaded by Europe and bilateral cooperation's;
- Increase the financial market and opportunities for small and flagship projects in Circular Economy;
- Territorial cohesion and regional symbiosis between European Countries & Africa and South of America; and
- Promote knowledge and the responsibility of Young People in Circular Economy.
In order to present and discuss the knowledge and science (with a focus on increasing cooperation, actions and network capacities), within the field of Circular Economy, the event will gather relevant personalities and institutions from around the World.

Julia works as special advisor to International Resource Panel Co-Chair Janez Potocnik, and leads the Natural Resources and Global Policy Programme at SYSTEMIQ. She was a Co-Author of the Report “A System Change Compass: Implementing the European Green Deal in times of recovery”, as well as of the publication “Resource Efficiency and Climate Change: Implications for Business Leaders (IRP2021)”
Mika Sulkinoja helps the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra to plan and intensify its international co-operation in the circular economy and climate fields. His aim is to take Sitra’s experiences onto the international agenda and stimulate the climate debate in Finland. He leads the work on international projects such as the World Circular Economy Forum.

With a background in Energy and Environmental Engineering, Beatriz Ildefonso has been working in the Renewable Energy sector since 2019. She is currently a researcher at the Laboratory of Energy Policy of Ljubljana, in Slovenia. She is also a board member and the Policy team leader at YES-Europe (Young leaders in Energy in Sustainability), a youth-led NGO.
His focus is on projects in the waste and water industry. He is currently leading the research project: metabolon that develops innovative solutions for the reuse of waste materials to foster a sustainable circular economy.
Director of the European Remanufacturing Council in Brussels, a member of the World Economic Forum Advanced Manufacturing and Production Council and member of the United Nations Working Group on Product Life Extension. He is Director of Circular Economy consultancy Oakdene Hollins.
CEO and founder of AgroGrIN Tech with a PhD in Biotechnology and Food Engineering by the Portuguese Catholic University. Circular Economy Specialist in the Food Sector. On the innovation and technology development field she is the inventor of one granted European Patent and is the autor of another one in the process of submission. Has been involved in different entrepreneurship activities related to innovation and business development at the food sector.

Sustainability professional with over 8 years of experience across various sectors such as energy access, circular economy, renewable energy, and policy. She is currently part of the African Circular’s Economy Network (ACEN)’s executive team, and works as a sustainability consultant. She is passionate about sustainability and the role the green economy will play in contributing to Africa’s economic development.

Reid Lifset is a Research Scholar and Resident Fellow in Industrial Ecology on the faculty of the Yale University School of the Environment (YSE). He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Industrial Ecology, an international peer-reviewed bi-monthly headquartered at the Center for Industrial Ecology of the YSE and owned by Yale. He is a member of the UN’s International Resource Panel (IRP) and the governing council of the International Society for Industrial Ecology. His research focuses on the application of industrial ecology to novel problems and research areas, the evolution of extended producer responsibility (EPR), resource and material efficiency, the environmental impact of the digital economy, and the circular economy.
Dr. Susanne Kadner initiated and leads the state and industry funded, multi-stakeholder Circular Economy Initiative Germany; before that she was Head of Science of the UN’s Climate Panel (IPCC) head office on climate change mitigation.
Thibaut Portevin is policy officer for green economy at the European Commission, DG International Partnerships. He currently works on the external dimension of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and is responsible for several EU supported initiatives in this area, notably the SWITCH to Green flagship programme supporting green business development in EU partner countries. Thibaut previously worked at the EU Delegation to Indonesia where he was in charge of forestry and climate change cooperation, and with several international NGO programmes. He holds master’s degrees in business and development.
